The Beitou district itself is in many ways a palimpsest, showing where Taipei's history has been remapped and rerouted. The old Beitou area holds over a century of stories within its walls. Development on Beitous hot spring recereation facilities began as early as the 1890s and the remodelling and expansion of this area continues today.
Constructed in 1913 the Beitou Public Bathhouse was the largest bathhouse in East Asia at the time. It has since been converted into the Beitou Hot Spring Museum. This museum itself stands within the public hot spring bath, erected during the Japanese colonial era. The building stands in exquisite Tudor style - an exterior of brick and wood before a luminous lime lawn. A charming scene, thanks to locals' fervent commitment to the preservation of this historical structure.
The noble building now recalls, with a love letter-like nostalgia, the history and development of Beitou's hot spring area. A walk through this picturesque building is also a tour of the artifacts chronicling its evolution. Through a labyrinth of relics and documents exhibited, visitors recall the discovery of this idyllic setting and unravel the story of Beitou's hot spring district. A visit to the Beitou Hot Spring Museum not only educates about Beitou, but can also be used as a cross-section into the history of the country itself. Here visitors to glean a more intimate insight into the history of this beautiful island.
Open Tuesdays to Sundays (closed on Mondays). Beitou Hot Spring Museum is easily accessed via Beitou MRT station, on Taipei's red metro line.
