The Red House is a historical Taipei site located in the Ximending shopping district. The are draws a particularly artistic crowd, being located near the Ximending Cinema park and right beside the Ximending bar area renowned as a hub of LBTQ-friendly activities. In 2007, the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Taipei Cultural Foundation co-founded the Red House art market initiative in order to promote the talents of Taipei's artistic community. The creative hub takes is situated inside of a remodelled red brick building, built during Taiwan's Japanese colonial era. Since then, the Red House art market has become a far more formal affair and attracts hoards of tourists to Ximending' shopping district. Within the building itself, many emerging artists and craftworkers display their latest works for sale, or just exposure.
The Red House is surrounded by vibrant cocktails bars and bistros - with the rarity of outdoor seating in Taipei, this is a great place to enjoy sundowners. A recommended day out: visit The Red House in the late afternoon, sit down in the surrounding square to enjoy the sky peaking pink over a cocktail, then venture into the surrounding night market or meander passed vendors toward the cinemas. The Red House market is easily accessible, situated less than a minute's walk from Ximending MRT station exit 1. This seasonal weekend market runs in Summer, from June until August, Saturdays and Sundays from 2PM until 9:30PM. A wonderful way for Summer time tourists to peruse the work of Taipei's upcoming and established designers.
